Some days later they managed to remove the limb and penetrate further into the dark cataracts, with passages traveling in several directions, one in the direction of the Gulf under the railroad bridge underneath the natural basin laying below the canal and another towards passing under Main Street. The explorers crawled through watery passages through several subterranean cataracts until they were blocked by a large limb, and hearing the sound of rushing water in the distance, of what they presumed was another waterfall. Leonard and a companion provided the first published account of exploration in 1858. The cave entrance was located in the West bank of the branch of the 18 Mile Creek, above the water line, east of Lockport's center where Cave Street intersects the Old Indian trail that became Main Street.ĭr.
